You probably see it on Nordictrack treadmills and think “What is that anyway? How does it benefit me?”
You came to the right place.
iFit is a very cool new (optional) technology you can add to your Nordictrack treadmill – but it has changed throughout the years.
It offers so many things today – and there’s so much misinformation about it – that it’s easy to get confused (or overwhelmed).
This post will go over what iFit Coach is exactly and what you get – so let’s get started. (Or just click here if you want to read more about iFit direct from the Nordictrack Manufacturer)
What is iFit Coach?
iFit Coach (formerly called iFit LIVE) is a fairly new technology that is an add-on option to almost every new model Nordictrack treadmill (note that many older treadmill models – depending on the year they came out – do not carry the option for iFit Coach).
iFit Coach basically uses the wireless internet in your home to connect your treadmill to the internet. From there you can do all sorts of wild and wonderful things.
Here are some of the things you can do with iFit Coach:
- Workout anywhere in the world – from Paris to Sydney
- Download new workouts to your treadmill – including HD workout videos you can watch and participate in
- Get personalized nutrition and meal plans to your email inbox
- Track your workouts over time including calories burned, time etc. – and set new goals to reach
- Track and improve everything from you daily diet to your sleep habits
Sounds great right? But how does it work? Let’s dig a little deeper:
iFit Coach Benefits
Workout Anywhere in the World
iFit works with Googlemaps and Google streetview to show you real scenery of the different trails you’re running. (You can view the iFit scenery either through the web browser in your console – if your treadmill has one – or through your own tablet).
There are a number of premapped “famous” trails you can choose from – like the shores of Hawaii or the streets of Paris. Or you can also use the Googlemaps feature to plot out your own course.
So if you want to visit an old neighbourhood for example, you can do that with this software.
“Virtual Reality” Workouts
In addition to watching the scenery pass you by while running or walking these different trails, the treadmill also inclines and declines (if capable) to match the actual terrain.
This is as close as you can get to real world training – without actually being there.
Take Fitness Classes From Your Treadmill
You can also download and watch a huge library of fitness classes and personal-trainer led workouts. Here’s a video showing you some of these personal trainer-led workouts from all over the world:
Basically if you don’t want to go to the gym (or you don’t like training at the gym), this is a perfect solution.
Workout Tracking and Goal Setting
iFit automatically tracks your workouts including calories, time and more. You can also set goals and see how far you’ve come – which can really motivate you to go further than ever before.
You can also share your workout progress with Facebook friends or friends in the iFit community.
Are There any Downsides to iFit?
While iFit is amazing – and takes your treadmill training to the next level, there are a few things you should know.
iFit is a subscription-based service running around £79 per year. Then again, it’s also optional – so you don’t need to get it if you don’t want it.
Your treadmill will work perfectly fine without iFit (Note, this is true in the UK and Europe only – many Nordictrack treadmills in the USA now require an iFit subscription). You can always wait and add iFit later if you want.
Also, be aware that if you buy a Nordictrack treadmill that doesn’t have a web browser (like the C700, T10.0 or the X7i incline trainer), you’ll need to connect to iFit through your own tablet.
If you don’t have a tablet, you won’t get full use from the iFit subscription.
Which Treadmills Work With iFit?
Basically every treadmill we review on this site has the option for iFit.
My personal favorites are the Nordictrack Commercial 2450 – because it also has a huge web browser in the console and the Nordictrack X9i Incline trainer – because you can burn up to 5 times more calories with it than on a regular treadmill.
